Chiller Tuesday Horror VHS Reviews with Kris!

Hey Creeps!
Welcome back to another edition of Chiller Tuesday Horror VHS reviews! As always, we have the amazing Horror Queen, Kris reviewing her favorite celluloid slashers! This week we have, 'The Burning' from 1981. Take it away Kris...

Back down to the VHS crypt we go with 1981’s “The Burning”! Directed by Tony Maylam, this was one of the movies released at the beginning of the slasher craze to hit the 80s! 1981 was a big year for slashers, which caused some to fall under the radar at the time. This script was in production prior to 1980s “Friday the 13th” and as previously mentioned, cause for “Madman” to rewrite their script due to too many similarities.
The movie opens with a few of the campers at Camp Blackfoot, plotting to scare the caretaker. After placing a candle-lit severed head next to his bed, caretaker Cropsy knocks it over in fear and goes up in flames! Cropsy spends the next few years in the hospital, but with nothing more they can do to improve his condition, he is released. After immediately picking up and murdering a prostitute, it’s off to Camp Stonewater we go!
With the kill count only reaching 10, this slasher is a slow paced one, although it still landed itself on Video Nasties for its gore in the movies most infamous scene. Tom Savini passed up Friday the 13th Part 2 to work the effects on this film, and the payoff was worth it! Where the movie lacks in high body count and lackluster climax, it makes up for in beautiful makeup!
This movie is still quite a gem amongst horror fans, despite its short comings. With a like-able cast, good effects, and a simple yet effective story, this movie lands high on my recommendation list! It just doesn’t feel like summertime without Cropsy!
