Chiller Tuesday VHS Horror Reviews: Soul Taker 1990
Every week our friend Kris the Horror Queen likes to unwind with a cup of Catfight Coffee and a VHS tape from her robust archive of 80's and 90's horror movies. Chiller Tuesdays are Kris's review of movies forgotten, on a format that's nearly lost, but not loved dearly...
Welcome back! Down the lair we head today, where there is no stairway to heaven. Todays media spotlight focuses on Michael Rissi’s “Soultaker” also known as “Kiss of Death”. Filmed in Mobile, Alabama and released in the US in October of 1990, this film centers on 4 teenagers involved in a fatal car crash that lands them trapped between life and death. The movie opens in a hospital where a man in black appears to seemingly suck the soul out of another while he lays helplessly in bed, thus adding to the title. We then cut to a teenage girl picking up her friend to head to Summerfest, where her ex will be, causing a stir of emotions in her as she only left him to appease to her parents wishes. After the teens leave the fest and the driver embarks on a dangerous alcohol fueled drive, they end up in a serious wreck. As they emerge from the car, they think they were extremely lucky to survive without a scratch. The realization soon sets in they they are in fact stuck between life and death, as they are hunted by the “The Angel of Death” (played by Robert Z’dar) and “The Man” (played by Joe Estevez). As 'The Man' hunts them as they frantically try to make it back to their hospitalized bodies, he’s drawn to one of the teenagers he believes to be his lover from a past life. This proves to make it difficult for him to complete the task of …..collecting their souuuuuuuls! Will they make it to their bodies in time to return to our world, or be stuck in the inbetween until meeting their demise?!
If you’re into low budget, cheesy effects, and bad movies that dare I say aren’t that bad, give this one a watch! Often falling under the radar with little to no acknowledgment outside of its episode on Season 10 of MST3K, I’d give this one a shot with a group of friends if you’re looking for some silly entertainment!
